ISTANBUL – Attorney of Corrie has stated that Israeli court’s verdict in Rachel Corrie’s lawsuit was a systematic failure.
Rachel Corrie who was killed in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip in March 2003 by an Israeli bulldozer during a protest as she was with a group of pro-Palestinian activists acting as human shields to prevent a house demolition.
“While not surprising, this verdict is yet another example of where impunity has prevailed over accountability and fairness. In denying justice in Rachel Corrie’s killing, this verdict speaks to the systemic failure to hold the Israeli military accountable for continuing violations of basic human rights,” attorney Hussein Abu Hussein said on Tuesday.
Verdict of Jusge Oded Gershon was “I reached the conclusion that there was no negligence on the part of the bulldozer driver.”
Judge Gershon stated that there was no case for negligence of Israeli army.
Corrie family launched a civil suit against the state of Israel and the defence ministry for a symbolic 1 USD in damages and legal expenses.
Attorney Hussein added, “Rachel Corrie was killed while non-violently protesting home demolitions and injustice in Gaza, and today, this court has given its stamp of approval to flawed and illegal practices that failed to protect civilian life. In this regard, the verdict blames the victim based on distorted facts and it could have been written directly by the state attorneys.”
The case was held at Haifa District Court in northern Israel.
