A husband and wife who have been criticized for how they have run a Modesto housing nonprofit are scheduled to appear in Stanislaus County Superior Court next week in an unrelated civil lawsuit.
Joe and Denise Gibbs face a wrongful death lawsuit in the 2008 death of Mario Alberto Martinez. Joe Gibbs was convicted last year of felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in Martinez’s death.
A hearing is scheduled Nov. 23 in the wrongful death lawsuit.
The Gibbses and their housing nonprofit, Stanislaus Community Assistance Project, have come under fire since late spring, when news broke about a $627,000 compensation package for Joe Gibbs. Denise Gibbs is the nonprofit’s chief executive officer.
Later Bee stories detailed how Denise Gibbs’ parents, assorted SCAP staff members and their relatives were living in SCAP homes, which had been paid for with taxpayer dollars.
